NORWEGIAN LAUNCHES FOUR NEW ROUTES FROM ARLANDA FOR SUMMER 2025
Norwegian is adding four new European destinations from Arlanda just in time for the 2025 summer season.
The new direct routes to Bucharest, Porto, Lyon, and Bilbao will each operate twice weekly. They are expected to appeal to both leisure and business travelers, offering a wider selection of direct connections. For many, this means shorter travel times and increased opportunities to access new parts of Europe.
Norwegian’s investment signals a desire to strengthen its presence in Sweden and meet growing demand. By expanding its route network, the airline not only bolsters its own position but also contributes to Arlanda’s role as a leading hub in the Nordic region.

AIRLINE TAX SCRAPPED – NORWEGIAN MAKES A MAJOR INVESTMENT IN SWEDEN
The controversial airline tax is being abolished, paving the way for a significant expansion of Norwegian’s offerings in Sweden.
In an interview in the newspaper tidningen näringslivet, Norwegian CEO Geir Karlsen welcomes the scrapping of the tax but warns that Arlanda is currently the least attractive airport in Scandinavia.
The decision is expected to have immediate effects on the travel market, where new routes and increased capacity can benefit travelers with more destinations and better prices. Norwegian sees an opportunity to strengthen its position and attract more Swedish passengers.
The company emphasizes that the impact of removing the airline tax may be greater than many anticipated. By investing in more aircraft and personnel, Norwegian signals a long-term ambition to establish itself as a leading player in the Swedish market.

AIDA HADŽIALIĆ: URGENT NEED FOR A NEW AGREEMENT WITH ARLANDA EXPRESS
In an article in Dagens Industri, Regional Finance Commissioner Aida Hadžialić warns that Arlanda risks losing both air traffic and critical investments if a new agreement with the owners behind the Arlanda Express is not reached as soon as possible.
“It must be easy and quick to travel to and from Arlanda. It mustn’t be too expensive either,” Hadžialić says in the article.
She describes the situation as urgent, arguing that the current agreement does not create the conditions necessary for the required development. Without a more long-term and modern arrangement, Arlanda risks falling behind other European hubs, which could have negative consequences for both business and employment.
She particularly emphasizes the need for clear guidelines and swift action from the responsible parties. With a new agreement in place, Hadžialić believes that Arlanda could strengthen its competitiveness, attract more international routes, and better meet the travel needs of the future.

THE GOVERNMENT’S INVESTIGATOR WANTS TO MAKE TRAVEL TO ARLANDA CHEAPER AND EASIER
In an article in Dagens Industri, proposals are highlighted to make the train journey to Arlanda both smoother and more cost-efficient, thereby making it easier for travelers heading to and from the airport.
The idea is to simplify the entire travel experience, lower prices, and thus create a more attractive alternative to what is available today. With better-tailored departures and a more customer-focused approach, travel times can be shortened, service improved, and accessibility increased.
By lowering the barriers for travelers—whether they are on business or leisure trips—Arlanda can strengthen its position and attract more people to choose the train over driving or taking a taxi. The hope is that a more competitive and easily accessible connection will benefit both travelers and the region as a whole.

GREEN INDUSTRY DEMANDS INVESTMENT IN ARLANDA
Social Democrats in Region Stockholm, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten: Air Traffic Must Increase.
In a debate article in Aftonbladet, political leaders from the regions of Stockholm, Västerbotten, and Norrbotten highlight several key points:
A green reindustrialization is currently underway in northern Sweden, heavily reliant on robust national and international communications. Sweden, particularly northern Sweden, must attract skilled labor and talent from across the globe. This challenging task becomes impossible if Sweden faces isolation due to fewer direct connections and departures to and from Arlanda.
Between 2018 and 2023, Arlanda’s accessibility declined across all regions, both domestic and international. Reversing this trend requires a unified effort across political lines, industries, and societal levels.
We identify several critical issues essential for reversing this development:
- Strengthen Arlanda’s competitiveness.
- Accelerate the green transition in aviation.
- Enhance international accessibility to Arlanda Airport.

THE MINISTER: STOP SUSPECTING AVIATION
Aviation will increase and it is important to strengthen Arlanda. This is claimed by Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD) in an article in Svenska Dagbladet. The minister wants to remove the flight tax and see a ‘stop to all suspicion of aviation’.
Copenhagen airport is expanding and taking more and more of the aviation in the Nordics. This is especially true for the long haul lines with direct flights to other continents.
As reported by SvD Näringsliv recently, there is growing concern in Stockholm, where significant business representatives want to see investment and expansion of Arlanda. The demands are directed not least towards Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD).
‘Considering the transition aviation is undergoing (towards fossil-free fuels), we cannot expect aviation to continue at this level or to decrease. On the contrary, we need to anticipate that when aviation becomes an even more sustainable way to travel, more people will want to fly,’ says Andreas Carlson in the article in SvD.
‘I have great confidence in the plans that the Swedish aviation industry has to transition,’ he continues. ‘There must be an end to the suspicion of aviation’s ambitions to transition.’

Japan is Sweden’s second largest trading partner in Asia. Sweden in turn is the largest Nordic export market for Japan.

WHILE KASTRUP TAKES OFF, ARLANDA REMAINS ON THE GROUND
Both Kastrup and Gardemoen are larger than Arlanda and have a better range of business-critical long-distance routes, says leading representatives of the Swedish business community in a debate article in Dagens Nyheter.
From Arlanda you can go on holiday, from Kastrup you take business trips. Long-term underinvestment in the airport, plus the Swedish aviation tax, has meant that other Nordic capitals have come further. In addition, increased capacity is needed for a green transition. Jobs and growth require that isolation be broken.
Arlanda is the link between the world and hundreds of small towns around the country. Without good connections with the outside world, the new industrialization that so many places are hoping for will not be able to assert itself in the global competition.

THE CONNECTIONS TO ARLANDA HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED
The number of air connections to and from Arlanda has decreased more than in comparable regions in Europe according to a new report.
Arlanda’s availability decreased by 25 per cent between 2018 and 2023, a new study shows.
– It is worrying. The gap to Kastrup is growing. Sweden’s economic growth will be negatively affected, says financial regional council Aida Hadzialic (S).
– In order for us to continue to be interesting as a trade partner, to be able to compete globally and to attract both investments and visitors, it is important that there are fast direct connections to Stockholm, says Anton Västberg, development director in Region Stockholm.
Aida Hadzialic points to several different measures that need to be taken.
– It is time to move the air traffic from Bromma to Arlanda. We must do everything we can to get connections back, not least direct flights to various destinations, she says.

MILESTONE IN STOCKHOLM ARLANDA’S DEVELOPMENT – NEW MARKETPLACE AND SECURITY CHECK-POINT OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED
On Tuesday, October 10, Stockholm Arlanda Airport’s new 11,000 square-metre Marketplace and the airport’s new, faster security check-point at Sweden’s largest airport were inaugurated, with speeches by Swedavia’s CEO, Jonas Abrahamsson, and Andreas Carlson, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing.
Combined, the development work, including a new security check-point and a Marketplace, is the largest investment ever at Stockholm Arlanda and will contribute to a significantly improved passenger experience for the airport’s passengers.
“Sweden’s need for exchange with the rest of the world will always be great, and that requires a strong Stockholm Arlanda.” says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s president and CEO.

SWEDAVIA WARNS OF FEWER SAS FLIGHTS FROM ARLANDA AIRPORT
SAS has increasingly clearly prioritized Kastrup over Arlanda and now there is a risk that the development will continue, according to Swedavia’s CEO Jonas Abrahamsson, who is calling for political strength – and a scrapped flight tax.
“It is more important than ever,” he says in an interview in Dagens Industri.
Statliga Swedavia’s CEO Jonas Abrahamsson joins those who praise that SAS now has stable new owners.
But there are clouds of worry. One is that the development where SAS prioritizes Kastrup over Arlanda for its intercontinental flights is accelerating.
“It is clear that we as a country, and we as a company, now need to work even harder to ensure that we are competitive so that we can attract the availability that is required,” he says.

SWEDAVIA’S TRAFFIC STATISTICS FOR JULY 2023

In all, nearly 3.2 million passengers flew via Swedavia’s airports in July, which is an increase of 14 per cent compared to July 2022 and 85 per cent of the pre-pandemic level in July 2019. The last time that Swedavia’s airports had more than 3.2 million passengers was in October 2019.
Stockholm Arlanda Airport had more than 2 million passengers during the month. That is an increase of 17 per cent compared to July last year, and international passenger volume was near the airport’s pre-pandemic level.

NEW DIRECT ROUTE TO BEIRUT FROM STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT
Eurowings continues to expand at Stockholm Arlanda Airport by launching a new direct route to Beirut.
This will further establish the German value carrier’s presence at Stockholm Arlanda and meet the increased demand for a direct route to the capital of Lebanon.
“There is a great confidence in the Swedish air travel market, and Eurowings investment in additional routes from Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a clear sign of this. It is evident that there’s a demand from travellers who wish to visit their friends and family in the Middle East, as well as from tourists who wish to discover something new. Swedavia main goal is to increase connectivity and the new route with Eurowings will be an important part of this, both for business and leisure travellers/passengers”, says Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia.

SUGGESTIONS FOR LONG-TERM SUSTAINABLE AND COMPETITIVE SWEDISH AVIATION
On May 23, the largest players in the Swedish aviation industry submitted an action plan for long-term sustainable and competitive Swedish aviation to Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson.
Based on five overarching goals, concrete measures are proposed that both the industry and the government should take to drive the transformation of aviation, increase the competitiveness of Swedish aviation and make aviation a natural part of the Swedish transport infrastructure.
The aviation industry has agreed on five focus areas that it believes need to be developed so that aviation can contribute to positive social development and reduced climate impact.
- Increase accessibility within Sweden and internationally by air.
- Ensure competitive conditions for Swedish aviation to enable healthy competition within the EU and the rest of the world.
- Develop Stockholm Arlanda Airport as a hub and a sustainable future airport.
- Make Sweden a leading country for the development and use of fossil-free aviation.
- Work for high aviation safety work with effective target-based regulations that include drone traffic.
Each focus area is linked to a number of concrete measures that the aviation industry and the government need to take for the implementation of the action plan. In total, the action plan contains 32 proposals addressed to the government. In addition, the industry points to a number of measures the industry needs to implement by itself.

That is an increase of more than 40 per cent compared to March 2022 and is equivalent to 77 per cent of the level before the Covid pandemic in 2019. “As an industry, we need to restore confidence, and we can only do that by working together. RYANAIR CONTINUES ITS HEAVY INVESTMENT IN ARLANDA
Ryanair continues to invest heavily in the Swedish market and develop its operations at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Two more routes and a new aircraft are now being added, while existing routes will have expanded timetables for the summer season. That means eight new routes will have been launched since October 2022, with Ryanair now operating a total of 45 routes and 320 flights a week to and from Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
With its new investment, Ryanair will have a total of five aircraft stationed at Arlanda. Of the eight new routes in 2022–23, service is already available to Birmingham, Malta, Pisa, Turin, Tuzla and Valencia, while two new routes will debut in the spring and summer:
- Arlanda – Dublin will start March 26
- Arlanda – Porto will start June 4

SWEDAVIA’S TRAFFIC STATISTICS FOR 2022: A STRONG RECOVERY
Air travel in 2022 was characterised by a strong recovery in both air travel and Swedish connectivity, with a sharp increase in the number of destinations from Swedavia’s airports.
Despite a weak start to the year due to the Omicron variant and other global concerns, Swedavia welcomed nearly 28 million passengers in 2022 – an increase of more than 130 per cent – compared to nearly 12 million passengers in 2021. The year ended on a strong note, especially at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, which in December posted its best passenger numbers for a single month since the start of the pandemic.
The passenger trend was mostly driven by strong demand for international flights at Stockholm Arlanda. Stockholm Arlanda Airport had more than 18 million passengers for the full-year 2022, an increase of nearly 150 per cent compared to 2021 and nearly 75 per cent of its pre-pandemic-volume in 2019. More detailed information about Swedavia’s traffic figures and statistics is available on Swedavia’s website (in Swedish).
New international flight routes from January 2023
New routes in January this year are Valencia with Ryanair, Innsbruck with Eurowings, and Lyon with Norwegian. All of these routes are from Stockholm Arlanda. Later this spring, SAS will launch non-stop service to New York from Göteborg Landvetter, while Air Serbia will launch non-stop service to Belgrade.

SWEDAVIA TO OPEN ADDITIONAL TERMINAL AT STOCKHOLM ARLANDA – INCREASED AIR TRAFFIC AND NEW OPERATIONS BEING LAUNCHED
Swedavia has decided to open another terminal at Stockholm Arlanda Airport starting October 26. In addition to Terminal 5, Terminal 2 is now also being placed in operation. The decision was made as a result of increased air travel and investments in operations at Arlanda by a number of airlines during the autumn.
“We are pleased to note that air traffic and passenger volume have increased at a faster pace than we had thought and hoped for and that we need to place another terminal in service earlier than planned. The fact that we are now increasing capacity at the airport is an indication that our industry is on its way back,” says Peder Grunditz, airport director at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
In March 2020, Swedavia decided to concentrate all airport operations at Terminal 5 given the pandemic’s enormous impact on travel. Air travel is now gradually returning, and summer travel has brought a further recovery.

NEW DIRECT ROUTE TO TOKYO FROM STOCKHOLM ARLANDA
Stockholm Arlanda Airport will increase the number of long-haul routes on offer when the Japanese airline ANA launches a non-stop service between Stockholm and Tokyo in the Summer schedule. This service will now be the fastest route from Scandinavia to Japan, which is one of Sweden’s most important export markets in Asia.
The route goes to the city airport Tokyo Haneda, which is the country’s major domestic hub. Haneda is also Japan’s largest airport and is ranked as one of the best airports in the world in terms of punctuality.
“Japan is one of Sweden’s most important trade partners, and we have recently seen significant Japanese investment in Sweden. The new direct route has long been sought by Swedish export companies, and it will also boost the Swedish tourism industry,” said Jonas Abrahamsson, CEO at Swedavia.
The number of passengers flying between Stockholm and Tokyo has increased a full 50 per cent in the past year. With business exchanges growing between the two countries and a large number of tourists travelling in both directions, there is a great need for more access between the countries.

CLOSE BROMMA AIRPORT AND EXPAND ARLANDA
Connect Sweden suggests to close Bromma airport and one of the runways at Arlanda airport. But before that, they think that a new, parallel runway, has to be built at Arlanda.
The political standstill regarding aviation must come to an end, thinks Connect Sweden. It’s about Sweden’s competitiveness and future growth.
The agreement on Bromma’s existence expires in 2038 and forecasts indicate that Arlandas maximum capacity will be reached in 2035. With a new runway, that is paralell to the other ones, instead of the current 3rd runway which is diagonal, Arlanda’s capacity would increase significantly. But given that the last major rebuild of Arlanda took 20 years to complete, it is time to start now.
Svedavia’s CEO, Jonas Abrahamsson, argues that it is possible to combine an expansion of Arlanda with reduced emissions, in part thanks to future goals with fossil-free fuels.
The alternative to expanding Arlanda is that air traffic moves somewhere else.
– I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that aviation is essential for Swedish welfare, competitiveness and growth, says Jonas Abrahamsson.

YEAR OFF TO A RECORD START AT SWEDAVIA’S AIRPORTS
More and more Swedes choose to fly. In January, passenger volume was up a full 10 per cent at Swedavia’s airports. At Stockholm Arlanda Airport, international traffic increased a full 13 per cent.
“More and more people are choosing to fly to and from our airports, which shows how crucial air travel is for Sweden’s growth. When we look at passenger volume over the past twelve months, we are really close to the historic 40 million mark,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.
Both domestic and international traffic increased sharply compared to January 2016.

AVIATION STRATEGY PRESENTED – FLIGHT TAX RISK BECOMING COMPETITIVE DISADVANTAGE
Swedavia welcomes that the government in its new flight strategy for Sweden highlight the importance of aviation for Sweden’s development and international availability. But the proposed aviation tax risk becoming a disadvantage.
“It is good that the government has developed a strategy where aviation’s importance for Swedish availability and growth is established. At the same time, I am concerned about the proposed aviation tax, which is considered to have little impact on climate emissions and risk becoming a competitive disadvantage for Sweden, especially when it comes to international airlines. Swedavia believe more in global agreements and efforts to stimulate both supply and demand for renewable jet fuel,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.

STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT TO LOWER AIRPORT CHARGES
Stockholm Arlanda is now further reducing its airport charges. The goal is to be Scandinavia’s leading airport.
“We are now reducing charges to airlines for the third straight year and will thus be even more competitive. The fact that we have succeeded in attracting 15 new intercontinental direct routes to the airport in three years is clear evidence of this,” says Elizabeth Axtelius, director of Aviation Business at Swedavia.
“The competition is becoming increasingly intense between international airports to encourage new airlines to launch operations or develop existing operations and invest in exciting new routes. So it feels really good that we can continue to lower our charges. When we look at comparable airports in Europe, our prices are about 20 per cent lower,” Ms Axtelius notes.

NEW PASSENGER RECORD FOR SWEDAVIA IN 2016
Swedavia’s ten airports had 39,512,000 passengers in 2016, which is a new record. That is a substantial increase of 5 per cent or almost 2 million passengers compared to 2015.
In relative terms, intercontinental air travel increased the most, 10 per cent to 2,253,000 passengers.
“It is really great that travel continues to grow so sharply. Air travel is an important prerequisite that gives businesses and individuals opportunities to have meetings and experiences. This growth also highlights the necessity of our ongoing investment to increase capacity at our airports,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.

INAUGURAL FUELLING WITH SWEDAVIA’S AVIATION BIOFUEL AT STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT TODAY
Swedavia is the first company in the world to purchase aviation biofuel corresponding to the amount used for trips its employees took on official business in 2016.
The aim of Swedavia’s investment in aviation biofuel is to promote the domestic production of biofuel and help achieve the ambition of making Swedish domestic air travel completely fossil-free by 2030 in order to reduce the environmental impact of air travel. Today there is very limited access to aviation biofuel, and the price is too high for airlines.
“We at Swedavia want to lead the way and help increase the demand for aviation biofuel,” says Jonas Abrahamsson, president and CEO of Swedavia.

STOCKHOLM ARLANDA WELCOMES SINGAPORE AIRLINES
From May 30th 2017, the airline will start operating their route between Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Changi Airport in Singapore. It will then be the fastest route to Singapore from Stockholm.
Singapore has been one of the most desired destinations from Arlanda for a long time, both in terms of business and leisure travel. To increase connectivity to the important markets in Asia from Sweden, a route to Changi Airport’s Asian hub is very important for business travelers. And via Changi Airport, leisure travelers can easy reach beyond Changi into Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand through the Singapore network.
”This new route to Singapore is the result of several years of intensive work and it is a highly demanded destination. Especially within the Swedish business world as the route gives easier access to the important markets in Asia,” says Karl Wistrand, CEO of Swedavia.

SWEDEN NEEDS A COLLABORATIVE INFRASTRUCTURE
In slightly more than two years “Sverigeförhandlingen” (The Sweden negotiation) leaves its suggestions on how a rapid expansion of high-speed trains in Sweden can be accomplished. Prior to this a discussion about the country’s overall infrastructure is essential, representatives of Connect Sweden writes today in the magazine Dagens Samhälle.
In this discussion, the government must clarify the importance of Stockholm Arlanda Airport and inform Sweden’s regions that the shift to renewable aviation fuel should be accelerated.
In pace with population growth, urbanization and changing trade patterns, Sweden’s infrastructure has to be strengthened. This is to create the right conditions for future increase in prosperity in Sweden.
Arlanda is and will remain Sweden’s hub for domestic as well as international connections. The airport is also Sweden’s fourth-largest train station. By 2035 the number of daily passengers at the airport will be about 100,000, most of them on the way to or home from international travel. It is therefore crucial for our overall infrastructure that the planning regarding the investments that are done today is based on Stockholm Arlanda Airport as a hub for travelers, and as an engine of growth for the entire Swedish economy.

US PRECLEARANCE AT STOCKHOLM ARLANDA AIRPORT
Stockholm Arlanda Airport could now become the first airport in Scandinavia to introduce what is known as US preclearance. US preclearance means that US immigration and customs inspection is carried out when a passenger departs from Stockholm instead of upon arrival in the US. The benefits include a better passenger experience, a smoother arrival in the US and the potential to attract new non-stop routes to the US.
The Swedish government today announced its decision to study the possibility of introducing US preclearance at Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The announcement means that Sweden could become the second country in Europe, after Ireland, to conduct an immigration and customs check on passengers from Sweden to the US upon their departure. Today almost 500,000 passengers fly from Sweden to various destinations in the US.
US preclearance means that a US immigration and customs check is carried out when a passenger departs from Stockholm Arlanda Airport instead of upon arrival in the US. Upon arriving, the passenger is processed as a domestic passenger, avoids long queues and can easily continue on to a connecting flight.
